The Trail
of the Serpent
|
|
Preached by Brother Ben
Howard
Dawsonville, Georgia
In the beginning, God created a beautiful garden in
Eden, and He placed man in the garden. He also placed
woman in the garden. He placed the serpent in the
garden, -- and God also placed the devil in the garden
of Eden. It was a beautiful place, but it was also a
testing ground for God’s children.
God placed Adam and Eve in the garden and said,
“THOU SHALT NOT.” But the devil used the serpent,
which could talk to Adam and Eve, and said to them,
“THOU SHALT.” Eve broke the law of God with the
serpent, and then persuaded her husband Adam. He
listened to her and got in trouble with God.
It was a dark day when God drove man from the
garden. Thorns and thistles were born that day. The
ground was cursed for Adam’s sake. Then man began his
long, hard struggle against earth. Man and the earth
were no longer at peace with one another.
Another thing that came with the fall was physical
suffering and pain. Eve listened to the
devil-inspired serpent, and broke God’s law, which had
to do with sex and the reproduction of the human
race. So God changed His law of reproduction in the
woman, which was perfect (like in the animal kingdom
today.) God said to Eve, “I will greatly multiply thy
conception (times which she could conceive; from once
a year or so to once a month), and in sorrow thou
shalt bring forth children.” Had it not been for the
fall of the human race, a woman would have been able
to give birth to her children without sorrow and
pain. She would be able to totally relax and let the
law of nature take over. She would be able to have
the beautiful experience of seeing a new life brought
into the earth, a heavenly planet.
Well, it looks like God’s plan got off to a bad
start to begin with. Eve broke God’s law of
reproduction, the serpent listened to the devil
instead of Adam, and was cursed of God from a creature
that could talk and make love to Eve, to a crawling
reptile.
Adam’s greatest sin was listening to his wife Eve
instead of God. Adam knew what God had said; he was
not deceived. He knew he was doing wrong, but Eve was
deceived; she thought she was doing the right thing.
Eve taught Adam her “new light”, not knowing it was
inspired by the devil. Adam, like many men have done,
listened to a woman and got in trouble. It wasn’t
what Adam and Eve had done that was wrong, but when
they did it. They didn’t wait on God till He told
them to come together.
God cursed the serpent and changed the reproduction
law in Eve. He told her that her husband would rule
over her; and to make sure she didn’t forget, God set
a law in motion to remind her every 28 days or so.
So we see things got off to a bad start for the
human race. In the garden of Eden, God’s children
chose to live by the law of knowledge instead of by
faith in God’s Word. Had Eve not broken God’s law,
there would have been only one people on earth -- the
children of God. But, sadly, there are two people on
earth now -- the children of God and the children of
the wicked one.
Yes, it was a dark day when man sinned against
God. I can see the devil as he must have laughed at
God and His children, but the devil made a mistake
that day, because he didn’t know about the mercy of
God. This attribute of God had not been manifested at
this time, for there was no mercy for the devil and
his angels. Praise God! There are still some things
the devil doesn’t know!
Satan knew that God had said, “..the day you eat
thereof, that day ye shall die..,” so he expected Adam
and Eve to fall dead in their tracks. However, the
devil made a mistake; God was going to show mercy on
His children. It was dark, indeed; but praise God,
there was a ray of hope! God killed a lamb as a
substitute, and spared His children.
God sent Divine Intervention to His children. Not
only did He slay a lamb instead of them, He also made
a promise to redeem them back to Himself by the Word
of God manifested in another Son. This time, Jesus
Christ, the original seed, the lamb of God -- dying
for their unbelief, the just dying for the unjust to
pay for their sins. Thus breaking the hold that satan
had on the human race and clearing the way for us to
get back in perfect harmony with God. But it will be
a long road back home; many things will happen to
express God’s attributes that He desires to make
manifested.
